Ductwork

Ductwork Installation and Repair in Memphis and the Mid-South

Your system is only as good as the ducts that carry the air. We size them, seal them, and fix the ones that were never right.

The part of the system nobody looks at

In a lot of Mid-South homes, 20 to 30 percent of the conditioned air never makes it to a room. It leaks out of unsealed joints into the attic, gets choked off by an undersized run, or dead-ends in a crushed flex line somebody stepped on twenty years ago. The result is a bedroom that’s never comfortable, an AC that runs all day, and an electric bill that doesn’t match the thermostat setting.

Griggs HVAC has installed and repaired ductwork across the Memphis area for over twenty years. We treat ducts as part of the system, not an afterthought: every new installation gets the ductwork evaluated, and every duct job gets measured airflow before and after so you can see the difference.

Ductwork services

  • Duct sealing and insulation. Mastic-sealed joints and properly insulated runs in attics and crawl spaces. The highest-return fix in most older homes.

  • Duct repair. Crushed, disconnected, or deteriorating runs replaced; sagging flex duct re-hung and supported the way it should have been.

  • Adding supplies and returns. For the room that never gets comfortable, a finished garage, or a bonus room the original system was never sized for.

  • Duct redesign and replacement. When the ducts are undersized, badly routed, or lined with failing insulation, we design a new layout and replace the system.

  • Air balancing. Damper adjustment and airflow measurement so every room gets the air it was designed for.

  • Commercial ductwork. Offices, churches, restaurants, and warehouses, including kitchen exhaust and make-up air.

The process

How we fix ductwork

Inspect

We look at the whole system: the runs, the connections, the insulation, and how the ducts are sized to the equipment.

Measure

Airflow is measured at the registers so we know which rooms are short and by how much, before anything gets sold.

Recommend

Seal, repair, add a run, or replace. You get a written recommendation with the numbers behind it.

Verify

Airflow is measured again after the work, so you can see the difference, not just feel it.

Sealing and minor repairs are usually done in a day. A full duct replacement in a typical home takes one to three days.

Sealing or replacing?

If the runs are sized right and in decent shape, sealing and insulating solves most problems for a fraction of the cost of replacement, and we’ll tell you that. If they’re undersized, crushed, or lined with insulation that’s coming apart, replacement is the better long-term fix. We inspect the whole system before recommending either, and the recommendation comes with airflow numbers, not a sales pitch.

Questions

Ductwork FAQs

How do I know if my ductwork has a problem?

Uneven temperatures room to room, excessive dust, high utility bills, whistling or rattling from vents, and a system that runs constantly are the classic signs. In older Memphis homes, leaky or undersized ducts can waste 20 to 30 percent of the air your system produces before it ever reaches a room.

Should I seal my ducts or replace them?

If the duct runs are the right size and in decent shape, professional sealing and insulating solves most leakage problems at a fraction of the replacement cost. If the ducts are undersized, crushed, badly routed, or lined with deteriorating insulation, replacement is the better long-term fix. Griggs inspects the whole system before recommending either.

Can you add a vent or a return to a room that never gets comfortable?

Often, yes. A room that’s always hot or cold usually needs better supply airflow, a return air path, or a damper adjustment. We’ll measure the airflow and tell you whether the fix is a new run, a balancing adjustment, or something in the system itself.

Does new ductwork make a difference if I’m also installing a new system?

It can be the difference between a new system performing as promised and one that never quite keeps up. Ductwork is sized to the equipment; when we install a system, we evaluate the existing ducts and let you know if they’ll hold the new unit back.

Do you install ductwork for room additions or converted spaces?

Yes. Additions, finished garages, bonus rooms, and enclosed sunrooms all need properly sized supply and return ducts tied into the existing system, or a dedicated ductless mini-split if the main system can’t carry the added load. We’ll recommend whichever is right for the space.

How long does duct work take?

Sealing and minor repairs are usually done in a day. A full duct replacement in a typical home takes one to three days depending on attic access and layout. Griggs schedules the work so your system is down as little as possible.
